Plane Crashes In Cemetery Near Central Jersey Regional Airport

Hillsborough Fire Department units helped control a fuel leak from the overturned private plane on Tuesday night.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A private passenger plane crashed in a cemetery near Central Jersey Regional Airport in Hillsborough on Tuesday night.

At around 5 p.m. a single engine plane crash was reported in an open field in a cemetery in the 1000 block of Millstone River Rd, Hillsborough Police reported.

The pilot, the only person on board, had just taken off from Central Jersey Airport when the crash occurred, police said.

Authorities went to the scene to find the overturned plane with a fuel leak, according to Station 37 Fire.

Firefighters stopped the fuel leak from the aircraft's fully loaded tanks and were cleared from the scene at around 10 p.m.

The pilot was taken to Robert Wood Johnson New Brunswick for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries by the Robert Wood Johnson Rescue Squad, police said.

The crash is currently under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Responding units to the scene were Hillsborough Township Police Department, Hillsborough Township Fire Units Station 37 and 38, Hillsborough Township OEM, RWJ Rescue Squad, RWJ MICU, Somerset County Hazmat, Manville Police Department, and Hillsborough Fire Safety.
