Possible Delayed Opening For Hillsborough Schools Due To Weather

Hillsborough Schools are keeping a close eye on the predicted icy weather overnight in case a delayed opening is needed to be called.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough Township Schools are keeping a close eye on the forecasted icy weather overnight in case a delayed opening is needed to be called on Thursday morning.

"As is typical, the forecast continues to evolve and we are receiving updates at regular intervals," said Lisa M. Antunes, acting superintendent of Hillsborough Schools. "The predicted freezing rain and possible ice accumulations at this time indicate that an adjustment to the school day in the form of a delayed opening may be expected for tomorrow, however, we will continue to monitor the weather overnight."

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for six New Jersey counties including Somerset. Heavy rain – much of it freezing in North Jersey, and some snow in Sussex County – is expected to begin falling after 8 p.m. on Wednesday and could last into Thursday. Precipitation could last throughout Thursday and into Friday, however, particularly in Central Jersey, South Jersey and the Jersey Shore. "Our greatest concern lies with the homes located on the mountain, as the higher elevation makes a big difference in the possibility of ice accumulation or hazardous road conditions," Antunes said.

Antunes said the district will have their buildings and grounds crew, including custodial staff, ready to arrive early keep sidewalks and parking lots safe.

The district will also keep in contact with the police and Department of Public Works for road conditions.

"As you may imagine, these decisions are often not very easy ones to make, however, the safety of our students and staff remain at the forefront of any decision that is made," Antunes said.
