SCVTHS Students Inspect A Rutgers University Laboratory to Observe Safety Measures

Saanvi, Shreya, and Kushi began the Workplace Inspection project by visiting and inspecting the Goldman Group’s laboratory at Rutgers University’s Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology on December 18th, 2025. The Goldman Group, a cohort of Ph.D. candidates and professors, is a professional research organization engaged in advanced research in chemistry and chemical biology. As laboratory research entails dangerous chemicals, specialized equipment, and precise procedural needs, the chapter acknowledged the significance of assessing workplace safety practices in a professional, real-world environment.

Interest in the project was sparked within the chapter as a result of members’ discussion about potential careers in the field of chemical research, as many of the students noted an interest in earning their Ph.D. They wished to become educated on the safety protocols that would be needed in a professional environment, such as an accredited university like Rutgers University. The project was chosen because of the evident need to gain a better understanding of how professional laboratories were implementing safety measures and to determine if established health and safety guidelines were being properly adhered to.

In preparation for the project, the Health and Safety Committee began researching professional laboratory regulations by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Rutgers University’s chemical hygiene guidelines. After reviewing these guidelines, the committee created a comprehensive inspection checklist that emphasized essential safety features, including personal protective equipment, chemical labeling and storage, accessibility of safety showers and eyewash stations, ventilation systems, and appropriate waste disposal procedures.

From there, the committee coordinated with the Goldman Group to schedule an inspection date and obtain approval to observe laboratory operations. This involved professional correspondence in person and through electronic mail.

During the inspection, members carefully observed safety practices, documented findings, and asked questions regarding training procedures and compliance protocols. Following the visit, the committee met to evaluate their observations, identify strengths in the laboratory’s safety systems, and discuss any potential areas for improvement. The findings were compiled into a formal report. Overall, the project enhanced chapter engagement in workplace safety and provided meaningful insight into the application of professional health and safety standards in a laboratory environment.
