Sign Language Offered To Hillsborough HS Students

Governor Christie signed a bill into law making American Sign Language an official world language in NJ high schools.

Hillsborough, NJ -- Students looking to learn a new language will have one more option to choose from at Hillsborough High School.

Starting in September, an introductory sign language level 1 will be offered for students at the high school.

"Governor Christie signed bill S1760 into law in August 2015, making American Sign Language an official world language in NJ high schools which makes ASL an acceptable language to comply with world language graduation requirements," said Enrique Pincay, Supervisor of World Languages and ESL at Hillsborough Township Public Schools.

Due the growing interest from both parents and students, the school decided to begin offering the introductory course.

"Our community has shown interest in ASL and I think this option provides our students with a great opportunity to meet the graduation requirement through a course that has a different approach compared to the typical language offerings," Pincay said.
