Somerset Vo-Tech Students Build Puppet Theater for Hillsborough Library
The custom-built puppet theater, featuring a barn design with chalkboard paint, enhances the Children's Room at the Hillsborough Library.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Carpentry students at Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School (SCVTHS) recently constructed a custom puppet theater for the Hillsborough branch of the Somerset County Library System's Children's Room.
Catherine DeBerry, Branch Manager of the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey’s Hillsborough branch, contacted Rob Carrig, SCVTHS Supervisor of Career and Technical Education, to inquire about the project. Carrig consulted with Carpentry instructor Dan LaRue, and both agreed the students were capable of fulfilling the request.
Construction of the puppet theater was subsequently added to the Carpentry Program’s project list. The design chosen was a barn, featuring doors that open to reveal a stage area. Students worked on the plans for the structure before cutting, assembling, and decorating the theater.

The interior surfaces of the barn doors and the inside of the hayloft were coated with chalkboard paint. This feature allows children to draw scenery and other decorations, enhancing their performances. The project demonstrates a collaboration between county agencies and organizations.
"SCLSNJ Hillsborough Library's new puppet theater, designed and built by Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School's Carpentry shop, has become an instant favorite among our young patrons," said DeBerry.
