Man Wielding 3-Foot-Long Sword Fatally Shot By Hillsborough Police Identified
When police went to the Hillsborough man's home for a welfare check they found him holding a three-foot-long sword, said authorities.
HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A sword-wielding Hillsborough man, who was fatally shot by police on Sept. 28, has been identified.
Patrick Chin, 43, who lived on Piedmont Path was identified as the fatal victim, according to the Attorney General’s Office, who is investigating the shooting.
On Sept. 28 at around 4:10 p.m., five Hillsborough Township uniformed police officers went to Chin’s home after getting a request to check on his welfare, according to authorities.

Inside the home, Chin was holding a three-foot-long sword, said police.
Officer George Kokinakous fired his gun, fatally wounding Chin, according to the AG's preliminary investigation.

Officers and medical personnel rendered first aid to Chin, who was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:28 p.m.
The four other Hillsborough officers who were at the scene at the time of the shooting have been identified as Officer Robert Feriello, Officer Thomas Gurba, Officer Kyle Edmonds, and Officer Dylan Ely.
Feriello sprayed Chin with pepper spray during the incident, said police.
This investigation is being conducted pursuant to Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which implements the statutory requirement that the Attorney General’s Office conduct the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody, and which establishes clear standards and procedures for conducting such investigations.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
