Trapped Driver Rescued, Hospitalized With Serious Injures In I-287 Crash In Somerset Co.

FRANKLIN, NJ — Volunteer firefighters rescued a trapped driver who was later taken to a hospital with critical injuries following a crash with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 287.

On Monday at 9:34 a.m., New Jersey State Police(NJSP) Troopers went to the crash on I-287 North at milepost 12.1 in Franklin Township.

According to a preliminary investigation, a Nissan SUV was driving north on the entrance ramp from Canal Road to I-287 North.

A Kenworth tractor-trailer was driving in the right lane of I-287 North, said NJSP Caitlin Brennan to Patch.

In the area of milepost 12.1, the driver of the Nissan lost control of the vehicle, ran off the road to the left, hit the curb, crossed over the grass median, and entered I-287 North, said Brennan.

After entering the highway, the Nissan hit the tractor-trailer in the right lane, said Brennan.

Police identified the Nissan driver as David Soans, a 61-year-old man from Monroe.

Finderne Fire Department helped to rescue Soans from the vehicle before being taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

There were no other reported injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. No additional information was available.

The Finderne Fire Department, which covers the southeast section of Bridgewater Township, is always looking for volunteers.
