Woman Escapes Car Submerged In Water Using Lifesaving Tool In Somerset County

After her car plunged into the water, the 23-year-old woman called 911 while trapped inside where a dispatcher helped guide her to escape.

FRANKLIN, NJ — While trapped inside her car submerged in water, Franklin Township Police were able to guide a 23-year-old woman to escape on Thursday night.

On Thursday at 10:57 p.m., Sara Goyal of Franklin Township called 911 saying she was trapped in her car in the D&R Canal near Jacques Lane, said Franklin Township Public Safety Director Quovella M. Maeweather.

Police Dispatcher Ryan Howarth gave Goyal life-saving instructions. Goyal then used her window break tool to shatter the window and free herself.

"This timely decision allowed her to swim to the embankment while her vehicle began to float northbound," said Maeweather.

Police Officers Brian Quigley, Lauren Gregory, and Keshawn James, rescued Goyal from the edge of the canal.

Firefighters and EMS Personnel treated Goyal for minor injuries and released her at the scene.

"I commend Ms. Goyal for her courage and calmness during this emergency. She was prepared with a window break tool, something I suggest to all drivers on the roadway," said Maeweather."Dispatcher Howarth’s decisive, skillful, and convincing actions prevented a tragedy. I also commend our officers, who are currently being trained in water rescue, for responding swiftly and selflessly. This was a group effort by citizens, FTPD officers, the FD, and EMS personnel. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for everyone’s efforts."

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Franklin Township Police Department.
