HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken's professional theater company, Mile Square Theatre, has unveiled a slew of performances and programs through early summer, with "The Mountaintop" debuting this week.
Written by Pulitzer winner Katori Hall and directed by Jamil A. C. Mangan, "The Mountaintop" follows civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. the night before his assassination.
The limited engagement runs from April 16 through May 3.
"In this play, Camae tells Dr. King that what makes him different is that he is able to love those that could never love him back," said Chris Cragin Day, the theater's artistic director. “I can't think of anything we need more in America today."
"The play imagines a pivotal moment in history through a deeply human lens," the theater company said in a release. "Dr. King also shares a meaningful connection to Hudson County. During the height of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, he visited Jersey City twice to support local civil rights efforts and speak out against racial inequality."
The play begins on April 3, 1968, in the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. King winds down from a day of preaching and marching. The play offers an "intimate glimpse" into King's life and fears, the theater company says.
There will be special previews, an opening night reception, and a special fundraiser on Sunday for the theater and the Hudson School.

Performances are sponsored by Little City Books, the Hoboken Business Alliance, and more.
