HOBOKEN, NJ — Gov. Mikie Sherrill stopped into Mulligan's Pub in downtown Hoboken — a popular soccer viewing spot — to announce that New Jersey bars can extend their hours during the upcoming World Cup games.
The new guidance from the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control allows towns to keep bars open later during the matches, which kick off at Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford on June 13.
Eight games will be played in New Jersey during the 39-day tournament.
“The World Cup is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for people across our state to come together, celebrate, and enjoy everything that makes New Jersey special,” Sherrill said Monday. “Today we're making it easier for residents and visitors to keep the energy going beyond the stadium, whether that’s gathering with friends at local restaurants, cheering on matches at neighborhood bars, or enjoying the excitement in our downtowns and communities."
Sherrill said it'll be up to towns to establish the extended hours for bars and liquor stores.
In Hoboken, bars can stay open until 3 a.m., although new patrons are not admitted after 2 a.m.
Hoboken has released a list of activities they'll hold during the games, as have many other New Jersey cities.
“Today’s announcement gives municipalities the flexibility to celebrate responsibly while supporting local businesses, workers, and entrepreneurs during this historic moment," said Mayor Emily Jabbour on Monday.
The state remains committed to maintaining public safety, supporting law enforcement and local officials, and encouraging responsible service and consumption practices, state officials noted.
