NORTH JERSEY — Citibank plans to lay off nearly 70 employees in North Jersey by the end of this month, they said in a notice filed with the state.
According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification — which companies must file in advance of mass layoffs — 68 Citibank employees who work in Bergen and Hudson counties will be laid off by June 28.
Citibank had previously filed a notice in February saying that 141 employees would be laid off before that, between May 21 and June 14.
A Citi spokesperson told Patch on Wednesday morning that the layoffs will affect company offices, rather than bank branches.
In a statement, she said, "We will continue to reduce our headcount globally in 2026. These changes reflect adjustments we’re making to ensure our staffing levels, locations, and expertise [to] align with current business needs; efficiencies we have gained through technology... We are grateful for the contributions these colleagues have made to Citi."
She pointed to earnings calls in January and May in which executives discussed layoffs in relation to restructuring and AI.
In a Jan. 14 earnings call, Citigroup Chief Financial Officer Mark Mason said, “In terms of the headcount target, a couple years back we did talk about headcount coming down some 20,000 or so ... I would expect headcount to continue to decline, in 2026 and those outer years. As we make progress on our transformation, we'll see that cost and headcount come down as we continue to improve productivity and implement tools like AI.”
