HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — A flood watch has been issued for Hudson County and most other North Jersey counties, with 1-2 inches of rain expected on Monday.
"Low pressure will bring a period of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms to the region Monday into Monday evening, with potential for urban and poor drainage flood impacts, as well as localized flash flooding," the National Weather Service says.
Rain will fall throughout the day, particularly in late afternoon and early evening, with ponding possible on the roads, forecasters say.
"In terms of timing, the trend is for the system to be a bit slower, meaning showers/storms may not really move in until the afternoon but would linger through the evening and potentially overnight as well," the NWS said. "The severe weather threat should be diminishing through the evening but the flood threat may last into the overnight."
High tide in Hoboken is expected at 3:54 p.m. Monday.
Accuweather even addressed the World Cup match to be played in North Jersey on Monday at 8 p.m., saying, "Overcast and humid with rain tapering off; rain gear may be needed for the soccer match."
While World Cup games may be played rain or shine, the match will stop if a lightning strike is detected within 8 miles of the stadium, reports say.
On Sunday, New York City's Office of Emergency Management chimed in with this warning: "NYCEM reminds New Yorkers to prepare for heavy rain on 6/22. Basement flooding can happen quickly & be life-threatening. Move to higher ground if needed and stay out of flooded basements. Limit travel and do not enter flooded roads."
