BAYONNE, NJ — "Let's Go BAYONNE!" crowed the North Jersey city on Thursday, celebrating their Little League team's 2-1 victory in their first-ever World Series appearance on Wednesday night.
The Bayonne team defeated a squad from Bridgewater, Mass. in the Little League World Series held in Williamsport, Pa. — and there were other firsts.
Bayonne pitcher Mason Rincon smacked a walk-off home run in the sixth (and final) inning to put his team on top.
Rincon, a 12-year-old rising star born in Brooklyn, moved to Bayonne three years ago.
What's Next
The Bayonne team, from a peninsula city in Hudson County, will now face a team from West Chester, Pa., on Friday at 7 p.m.
If the young Bayonne bombers emerge victorious, they'll head to a championship game on Saturday. The winners will be crowned on Sunday at 3 p.m.
In Bayonne, a quiet city perched on the Newark Bay, fans were wearing "Bayonne Vs. Everybody" t-shirts and cheering for their local stars.
