With Festival Planned, One Hudson County Town Has Revived An Old Tradition

WEEHAWKEN, NJ — As some towns move away from mailers and printed media, one town has printed up its first city directory in 20 years, bringing back an old tradition in time for their annual fair.

Weehawken published its first town directory just in time for the annual Weehawken Day celebration this Saturday, featuring local photographers and designers.

The town will distribute the directories some time after the celebration.`

Susie Felber, a marketer, comedienne, and Weehawken resident who organizes local events, was tapped to create the directory after Mayor Richard Turner reached out to her.

Felber said new residents in the waterfront buildings might not be aware of everything the town offers, and not everyone is online.

The new 64-page document was designed without the use of AI — instead tapping local photographers, independent artists, and even a descendant of someone whose historical photo Felber wanted to use.

"[It has] all town services, with information presented in Spanish and English," Felber noted. "It also includes an illustrated centerfold map, the town's history, information about the schools, upcoming projects, and more."

The guide was produced by Big Noyes, in partnership with the Township of Weehawken. Most photos were taken by locals or donated by the Weehawken Historical Commission and the town.

Recently, the city of Hoboken, in slashing its budget, chose to stop sending out an annual print guide each summer with a calendar of events. But officials and Felber agreed it was time for Weehawken to buck the anti-print trend.

"The town has grown in population and what is available [to do] on the waterfront," she said.
