Boil Water In Part Of Hoboken Due To Main Break, City Says

HOBOKEN, NJ — The city of Hoboken and Veolia Water issued a localized boil water advisory on Friday night.

A contractor struck a 12-inch water main break, Veolia said.

Below is their advisory, sent before 6 p.m. Friday:

A localized boil water advisory has been issued for the area of Hoboken from Sinatra Drive to Bloomfield Street (both sides), from Second Street to 12th Street (both sides), beginning Friday.

Hoboken Water Utility is providing notification that a 12-inch water main was struck by a contractor along Sinatra Drive near Union Dry Dock, which has caused an acute, localized loss of pressure in that main. A potential or actual threat to the quality of water being provided to you currently exists. In the interest of public health, a boil water advisory is being implemented in the immediate area of the break until testing of the water supply is deemed satisfactory.

What To Do

Effectively immediately and until further notice customers in the area of Hoboken that includes Hoboken from Sinatra Drive to Bloomfield Street (both sides), north from 2nd Street to 12th Street, are instructed to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow the tap water to cool before using or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking; preparing foods; mixing baby formula, food, juices or drinks; washing vegetables and fruit; cooking; making ice; brushing teeth; and washing dishes until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

The following measures are also recommended:

• Throw away uncooked food or beverages or ice cubes made with tap water during the day of the advisory;
• Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking;
• Do not swallow water while showering or bathing;
• Rinse hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle;
• Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms;
• Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries;
• Provide pets with drinking water that has been boiled (and cooled).

This advisory is in effect due to fluctuations of water pressure in the system brought on by emergency repairs. Low water pressure could potentially allow for the presence of harmful microbes in the system. Microbes in drinking water can cause illness and could pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly people, and people with severely compromised immune systems. Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes.

The boil water advisory is in effect until further notice. Veolia will notify Hoboken customers when the advisory is lifted. Customers, even if their water is filtered at home, must boil their water for at least one minute and allow it to cool for the following uses: drinking, cooking, baking, washing dishes, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets or other consumption.

Please continue to boil your water or use bottled water until you are notified that the water quality is satisfactory. This advisory will remain in effect until repairs are completed and testing shows the water quality to be safe.

Veolia will also continue to collect samples and monitor water quality in the distribution system. The company will work with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to inform residents when the boil water is lifted.
