KEARNY, NJ — A man was arrested in Kearny on Thursday morning after shots were fired near a home, police said.
Police said that around 9:16 a.m. Thursday, they headed to a home on Webster Avenue after a 911 caller reported hearing gunshots.
Police heard another gunshot when they arrived at the residence, they said in a statement.
They then blocked off the area and began negotiating with a suspect, they said.
Thomas J. Romano, 57, who was being sought on a matter unrelated to the gunshots, surrendered, police said in a statement released around 12:30 p.m.
"As of this time, the perimeter remains in place and the investigation is ongoing," police said in the afternoon statement. "Everyone is asked to avoid the area of Webster Avenue near West Bennett Avenue until the incident has concluded."
Police said there is no active shooter or threat.
Police thanked agencies who responded, including the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team.
