New York, NY — Award-winning documentary film producer Art21 presents its very first exhibition of artworks, “The Lift,” an installation at Bloomberg corporate headquarters. Art21 Executive Director Susan Sollins is curator of “The Lift” and selected works by three artists – assume vivid astro focus, Kiki Smith, and Andrea Zittel – from Art21’s PBS broadcast television series “Art in the Twenty-First Century” for the exhibition. Given the energetic and colorful atmosphere at the Bloomberg offices, Sollins chose for the display one of the only public areas where visual information is minimal: the elevators. “The Lift” transforms Bloomberg’s two banks of eight industrial elevators into immersive art installations with customized wallpapers. From the highly energetic visual landscape of assume vivid astro focus (seen in New York City in Barney’s 2011 holiday windows created in collaboration with Lady Gaga) to Kiki Smith’s poetic images of a young woman with a parasol-like moonflower floating among owls and butterflies to the complex mapping of urban landscapes as abstract patterns by Andrea Zittel, each elevator offers a unique encounter with an artist’s world.
Employees, clients, and visitors of Bloomberg have the opportunity to experience these environments multiple times on a daily basis as they travel to, from, and within their workplace.

Susan Sollins, Art21 Executive Director and Curator, says: “When asked to curate an exhibition at Bloomberg headquarters, I became intrigued by the notion of providing Bloomberg employees and visitors with a concentrated experience with art, one that would be isolated – or perhaps even insulated – from the everyday work environment. Turning the famous statement by Robert Rauschenberg about creating art that acts in the gap between art and life, I determined to place this exhibition in a different gap, the one that exists between the outside world and the work environment. The elevators as mini exhibition spaces became my focus, as did the three artists in this exhibition who are part of the larger group of 100 artists Art21 has profiled to date in its Peabody Award-winning broadcast series, ‘Art in the Twenty-First Century.’”
Temo Callahan, Co-Founder and Design Director of Studio Printworks, says: “‘The Lift’ has been an extraordinary collaboration between artists, wallpaper printers, and curators. However, the unsung hero is the talented technician Jorge Aguilar, a master paper hanger who, with the eye of a true artist, made the challenging installation happen.”
“We applaud Art21's mission to innovate and inspire," states Erana Stennett, who manages corporate giving for the Americas at Bloomberg LP. “It is an honor to support their work and provide our employees and visitors with a unique experience.”
