On the 50th Anniversary of the Hoboken High School, 50 is the key!

On this eve of Hoboken High School's 50th Anniversary changes have taken place but the Pride, Tradition, and Commitment to Excellence remains strong within in the Redwing Nation.

On the 50th Anniversary of the Hoboken High School, 50 is the key number in many events that have taken place in the high school athletic program.

On October 14th, 2011, Head Coach of the Redwings Football Team Lou Taglieri, earned the 50th win of his coaching career by a 28-20 victory over Lincoln High School. This is an important milestone in a high school coach's career.

While Coach "Tags" has flourished on the field, 2011 saw the "End of an Era" for Hoboken High School with 50 being another key number. Former Head Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach, Charles "Buddy" Matthews has retired. Ending a coaching career, that has seen over a combined 50 seasons in both varsity sports. Coach "Matt" has been at the helm of both Varsity Basketball and Baseball for 52 seasons.

On the administrative side of the HHS Athletic program,Mauro “Mo” DeGennaro has retired from his position as Athletic Director at  Hoboken High School after 28 years of service. "Mo" has he was affectionately referred to wrapped up a 38 year career at Hoboken High School in December 2011, where he started work as a Science Teacher. Raised in Hoboken and graduating from Hoboken High School in 1970, Mr. DeGennaro has always been very proud of the Hoboken High School Athletic Program.

On this eve, of the 50th Anniversary change is happening but service to the community remains...so the tradition is passed on to new individuals.

Coach Tags is still at HHS winning games but new players have entered HHS. Replacing Coach Matthews is Coach Jack Baker. Coach Baker was a former high school stand-out for St. Peter's Prep and has years of experience coaching baseball on a collegiate level. Coach Baker's experience will be invaluable to the young Redwings.

Hoboken High school has a new Athletic Director, replacing Mr. DeGennaro is a young visionary and former Connors School teacher Mr. Martin Shannon. Mr. Shannon has coached for many years and has brought his knowledgeof sports and administration to Hoboken High School.

So, on this eve of Hoboken High School's 50th Anniversary changes have taken place but the Pride, Tradition, and Commitment to Excellence remains strong within in the Redwing Nation. Go Redwings!

Dont Forget: "Buddy Matthews Day" this Sunday, May 6, 2012 at JFK Stadium in Hoboken, NJ.

The team is honoring the former head coach (for 26 years) and the ceremony will begin at approximately 1:20 p.m. The game will start at 2pm against Pope John High School.
