Closed Hudson River Ferry Terminals Impact Commutes In Bergen, Hudson Counties

NORTH JERSEY, NJ — Two commuter ferry terminals that closed on Tuesday because of ice in the Hudson River will likely remain closed for at least the rest of that day, a NY Waterway spokesperson said.

Both the NY Waterway Edgewater terminal in Bergen County and the Liberty Harbor terminal in Jersey City were closed for the day.

The company carries an average of more than 32,000 passengers per day between Manhattan and New Jersey.

NY Waterway said they will run a substitute bus service for those using the Edgewater terminal.

"Our substitute bus service can provide more accurate transit times for our Edgewater customers," the spokesperson said.

Liberty Harbor customers can take local transit to other terminals in Hudson County, including in Paulus Hook and Port Liberté.

All of the other terminals were operating as of Tuesday afternoon, she said.

"We anticipate that with the warmer weather, Liberty Harbor will reopen in the following days," the company said. "We will continue to assess the conditions on the Hudson and keep our riders updated on the status of our ferries and terminals."

The spokesperson said that as of Tuesday afternoon, the two closed terminals would remain that way for at least the rest of the day, but any updates or changes will be posted here.

She noted, "As ice continues to flow through the Hudson River, NY Waterway’s experienced teams are working to safely navigate these challenging cold weather conditions. As always, our first priority is the safety of our passengers and crews."
