Deadline Is Monday To Run For 3 Hoboken School Board Seats

HOBOKEN, NJ — Positions on school boards in towns in New Jersey are unpaid, but you get to influence young minds. You also get to help determine how educational resources and taxes are allocated and spent.

For the towns in New Jersey who have school board elections this Nov. 7 — the same day as the general election — the deadline to file the appropriate paperwork with your local county clerk is July 31.

In Hoboken, there are nine volunteer members on the board, and three three-year seats are up for re-election each November. Read about their role here.

One of the most heated local issues pertaining to the board in recent memory was the debate over a $241 million plan to restructure the school buildings and build a new high school. The plan failed in a public referendum vote in January 2022.

Last November, school board candidates debated everything from whether board meetings should be broadcast live (they still aren't, although the three winning candidates said they should be) to "book banning" to charter schools.
