A disabled train caused long delays for NJ Transit riders crossing the Hudson River during the Wednesday morning rush hour, officials said.

NJ Transit issued an alert that warned commuters about 20-minute delays in and out of Penn Station New York shortly after 8 a.m. The delays were due to “a disabled NJ Transit train in one of the Hudson River tunnels,” officials said.

By 9 a.m., the delay estimates had grown to 45 minutes, with frustrated commuters sounding off on social media:

  • “We need Gateway! Trump keeps refusing to fund gateway and these tunnels are disintegrating. This delay was because of 1 broken train; imagine if instead part of the conduit broke off in a tunnel and damaged the signal system. Would be catastrophe. 2 tunnels is not enough.”
  • “What a terrible experience of being on this disabled train. No AC and customers starting to go crazy. How is there no efficient process control. The train clearly lost power before the tunnel but still proceeded to enter.”
  • “Thank god I have Twitter to remind me of your horrendous service because not a single announcement has been made on my train.”
  • “Would you like to pay for the hours of work I’m missing or call my boss so I dont get fired? You’ve delayed constantly the past 2 weeks.”

Port Authority officials announced that PATH trains were cross-honoring NJ Transit rail customers at 33 Street in NYC and Newark on Wednesday morning. NJ Transit officials added that PATH was also cross-honoring at Hoboken.
