HOBOKEN–The COVID-19 crisis has tested all of us in a multitude of ways. This is certainly the case for religious institutions all around the United States and certainly within our mile square. Two of the things churches are most know for are being centers of community and places of public gathering and these are two of the things the church cannot do for the sake of public health and safety!
And yet for Christians, this is the holiest time of the year. This week, the global church observes Holy Week, which includes Palm (or Passion) Sunday, followed by Good Friday (April 10) and finally culminating on Easter Sunday (April 12). But Christians are not going to let the novel coronavirus quash their hope. In fact, if there’s ever been a season in which we all need hope, it is right now!
Mile Square Church is a new church in Hoboken that just launched in October 2019. Since then, they have met in the Bowtie Cinema on 14th and Grand Streets in North Hoboken. However, the COVID-19 crisis has created opportunity for innovation. As a result Mile Square Church is holding two online services this weekend at their online campus for Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Good Friday is the day Christians remember the sacrifice and suffering of Jesus on the cross. Mile Square Church hopes to communicate the significance of this day by creating a highly interactive service that involves everyday household objects. At 7pm, the service will be streamed to Facebook and their online campus.
Easter Sunday is the day Christians believe Jesus was raised from the dead after his crucifixion. The belief that Jesus was both killed and raised from death is why this is such a hopeful time for Christians despite the circumstances. Since death was ultimately defeated by Jesus, Christians say that if anyone believes in Jesus, death–the formerly invincible enemy of all people–has no power, and therefore one need not fear anything–even the novel coronavirus. The Easter service will take place at 10am on both Facebook and their online campus. More information about both services can be found at www.easterforhoboken.com.
