First Jersey City Marathon Coming, Will Affect Hudson County Traffic

Born to run? 5,000 people will participate in Jersey City's first marathon. Hoboken officials advised drivers to avoid one entrance Sunday.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Jersey City's first marathon and half-marathon kick off this Sunday, April 23, at 7 a.m., rain or shine.

(While thundershowers are expected the night before, forecasters say the rain will taper off around 5 a.m. Sunday morning, with the sun peeking out by 9 a.m. The NWS forecast is here).

The marathon will be a 2024 Boston Marathon qualifying event.

The event will cause some re-routing of traffic in Jersey City, which could affect surrounding areas, particularly southwest Hoboken.

More than 5,000 runners will participate, the website says.

Hoboken sent out a message to residents Friday saying:

"On Sunday, April 23, Jersey City will host a marathon on several closed streets in the downtown area. Due to the anticipated southwest traffic impacts of the marathon, Hoboken’s Office of Emergency Management advises drivers to enter and exit the city of Hoboken from northern routes on Sunday."
