Flood Advisory Issued For Hudson County: See Timing, Map

Thunderstorms are predicted for Sunday night, and tides will be higher than usual.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Two days after a thunderstorm downed trees around North Jersey, another storm is expected late Sunday night.

A coastal flood advisory is in effect for Hudson County, eastern Essex County, and eastern Union County from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

"Minor flooding in the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline," the NWS said. "Some roads and low-lying properties including parking lots, parks, lawns, and businesses with basements near the waterfront will have minor flooding."

A flood statement was added until midnight, saying, "If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth."

Hoboken's tides will be higher than usual for the next few days. A storm during high tide can increase the likelihood of flooding. The tide is expected to reach 5.87 feet at 8:42 p.m. Sunday, around two hours before a downpour is predicted.

"While conditions have quieted down compared to the end of week, unsettled weather is likely to return on Sunday," the National Weather Service New York office warned. "Scattered thunderstorms are possible late afternoon and evening and a few may become severe with damaging wind gusts in excess of 58 mph. Dangerous rip currents are also expected at Atlantic Ocean beaches"

Here is the Hudson County forecast:

  • For Sunday, the NWS expects a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m.
  • Late Sunday night, showers and thunderstorms are expected before 2 a.m., then a slight chance of showers. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent.
