Flood Gates Go Down On Hoboken As Waters Rise (PHOTOS)

Dangerous flooding occurred on Hoboken corners during the 9 a.m. high tide. The city's OEM said people should stay off the roads.

HOBOKEN, NJ — As Hoboken's new floodgates came down before 9 a.m. this morning, cars drove through floodwaters and police began placing barricades around town.

A flood warning was issued until 12:30 p.m., as water levels have risen dangerously high.

The city of Hoboken's Office of Emergency Management issued a message around 8:30 a.m. telling people to try to stay off the roads, and a state of emergency was issued later. (READ MORE: State of Emergency Issued In Hoboken; School Superintendent Gives Update)

Forecasters said the area may get more than 4 inches of rain by the end of the day , unprecedented since Tropical Depression Ida, which took 30 lives in New Jersey in September 2021.

Officials have issued reminders that a car or person can become trapped quickly in a flash flood.

The northeast New Jersey region, including Essex, Hudson, and Bergen counties, is in a high risk area for heavy flooding on the National Weather Service's maps. See the maps here.

In downtown Hoboken, at least one school in a flooded area (Pumpkin Patch day care) was closed today and other schools said they may close early.
