Flu, Weather Take Toll On New Jersey Blood Donations: Red Cross

The severe winter weather and seasonal flu outbreak has caused a “critical” shortfall of blood donations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, prompting the American Red Cross to reissue an “urgent call for blood and platelet donors.”

In Pennsylvania and New Jersey, 35 blood drives have been forced to cancel due to winter weather this month, causing close to 1,100 donations to go uncollected. In addition, bitter cold and widespread flu have contributed to “very low turnouts” at many blood drives, the Red Cross stated.

Nationwide, more than 550 blood drives have been forced to cancel due to winter weather in January, causing over 16,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected through last week, the Red Cross said.
