Former Hoboken College Student Guilty In Stabbing Death Of Roommate In Jersey City

A former student at the Stevens Institute of Technology has pleaded guilty in the stabbing death of another student in Jersey City in 2020.

HOBOKEN, NJ — A 28-year-old former graduate student at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken pleaded guilty Wednesday in the stabbing death of his roommate, another student at the school, in Jersey City in 2020, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said Thursday.

Tong Cheng pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of aggravated manslaughter, prosecutors said. His roommate, Yuting Ge, 23, was stabbed to death in their New York Avenue apartment on Aug. 8, 2020.

Prosecutors said that police responded to the apartment, near Hutton Street, at 12:30 p.m. that day "on a report of a suspicious condition." They found Ge, who was a student at Stevens, dead.

"The cause of death was determined to be multiple stab wounds and the manner of death wasdetermined to be homicide," prosecutors said.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 28. The state will be recommending a sentence of 30 years in New Jersey State Prison to the No Early Release Act, prosecutors said.

Cheng was arrested without incident at a hotel in Weehawken on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, prosecutors said.

A story in NorthJersey.com from 2020 said that according to court documents, neighbors heard arguing around 7:30 a.m. that morning, and the victim begged for his life.

The state is being represented in this case by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Adam Salzer.
