“It is recommended that women begin an annual mammogram at age 40. Patients who have
been diagnosed with breast cancer have a higher percentage of survival if the cancer is
detected early,” said Chris M. McGreevy, M.D., a breast surgical oncologist at JCMC.
Those who participate in the hospital’s screening will be eligible for a free prize giveaway. In
partnership with JCMC, New Jersey Cancer Education & Early Detection Screening Program
(NJCEED), a subsect of New Jersey Department of Health, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's
Rho Kappa Omega Chapter are sponsoring the event, making free screenings possible for
people without insurance.
RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey Host Free Breast Cancer Screenings and Events in Recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, will host free breast cancer screenings and education programs across the state to educate women about the importance of early detection and breast health and offer free and accessible mammograms for those who qualify.
Early detection, regular screenings, and breast health education can save lives, but the CDC reports that nearly 30 percent of women miss their annual mammogram.
“Annual screenings are some of the most important tools we have in the fight against breast cancer,” says M. Michelle Blackwood, MD, FACS, Chief of Breast Surgery, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, and Director of Breast Health and Disease Management at RWJBarnabas Health. “Early detection of breast cancer significantly increases survival rates and outcomes which is why we strongly encourage women age 40 and over make getting a mammogram a top priority. Doing so could save your life.”
To make screenings more accessible for the populations they serve, RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey are hosting a number of free breast cancer screenings across the state for those who qualify. Registration is required for all screening events.
