Hoboken Deli Has Inspired A Sandwich Served At Restaurant In Australia

HOBOKEN, NJ — When Men At Work hit the U.S. pop charts in 1983 with their number one song, "Down Under," people everywhere were singing the lyric, "He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich" — and trying to figure out what that stuff was. But apparently, now Hoboken is answering this by introducing Australia to a different kind of lunch.

Down under in Melbourne, Australia, the restaurant Pretty Boy Floyd's has debuted several American-style sandwiches, including one modeled on Katz's Deli in New York. But they also tout their "Italian Roast Beef."

According to the Aussie culture magazine Broadsheet, "Inspiration for the Italian Roast Beef (a sandwich that has risen to fame thanks to its starring role in season one of The Bear) is lifted from Fiore's House of Quality in Hoboken, New Jersey."

The roast beef and mozzarella sandwich at Fiore's — located in Frank Sinatra's old 'hood on the west side of Hoboken — is popular throughout the United States as well, and can only be had twice a week at the family run establishment. Their famed "Saturday Special" also comes with peppers (have a look at it on their social media).

The deli also makes its mozzarella fresh, something on which several of Hoboken's family-owned Italian delis pride themselves. Fiore's "mutz" is so popular that people line up in the wee hours before holidays to buy it for family gatherings (read about that here).
