Hoboken High School Model UN Team Wins Awards In Debate Contest

The Hoboken team and its individual debaters won awards in the international competition, held virtually over two days.

HOBOKEN, NJ — The Hoboken High School Model United Nations Team won several awards this week in an international debate competition run by St. Peter's University.

This year, the competition was held remotely over a two-day period, with students from all over the world addressing global issues including the covid pandemic.

In the 2021 competition, Hoboken High School earned the Best Overall School Delegation for their Outstanding Performance in Discourse and Diplomacy.

In addition to Best School Delegation, Hoboken High School’s members earned the following individual awards:

  • Juliet Hysen and Leah Haber won best delegate honorable mention in the Commission on the Status of Women regarding the Increase in Gender-Based Domestic Violence During the Covid-19 Pandemic and Intersection of Racism and Misogyny: Perceived Skin Tone and Women’s Rights.
  • Feline Dirkx and Kia Hulstrom won best position paper in the Environmental Assembly for their analysis of the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Environmental Regulation and Enforcement and addressing Trans-border Environmental Stresses in the Indo-Pak Region.
  • Sheila Lam won best delegate honorable mention while participating in the Food and Agriculture Organization committee regarding the Protection of Food Supply Chains During the Covid-19 Pandemic and Rising Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Frannie Michaels and Daniel Weintraub won best delegates for their work on addressing the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Human Rights in South Sudan and Systemic Racism and Police Brutality in the United States.
  • Andrews Castlen and Asher Strell won best delegates in the United Nations Security Council regarding the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Active Regional Conflicts and the legality of Israel’s Annexation of Palestinian Land in the West Bank.

A district spokesperson said, "Congratulations to Mr. Huggins, Mr. D’Benado, and the entire Model United Nations Team."
