Hoboken High School Posts Record High AP Test Results, Expands Course Access

HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken High School is reporting a record year in its Advanced Placement program, with 2026 results topping state and global averages.

The tests are administered by the College Board and often allow students to get credit at universities.

Hoboken High School said earlier this month that a record number of students took the exams at the end of this school year, and many are signed up for AP courses next year.

Hoboken High students posted an average AP exam score of 3.57 out of 5, the district said.

That was above the New Jersey average of 3.46 and the global average of 3.29, a district spokesperson said.

The district said students outperformed the state in 18 of 28 AP subjects and exceeded global averages in 20 of 28 subjects, said a statement.

Kids in eight AP courses in the school averaged a 4.0 or higher, said the district announcement.

The top averages were: Calculus BC at 5, Precalculus at 4.8, U.S. Government and Politics at 4.53, Comparative Government and Politics at 4.5, and French Language and Culture at 4.5.

“These results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and educators,” said Hoboken High School Principal Robin Piccapietra. “Our AP program continues to raise the bar for academic excellence and opportunity.”

The district also pointed to sharp growth in participation, noting that 105 Hoboken High School students were recognized as AP Scholars in 2025, compared with seven in 2019.

The district also said 85 percent of students taking the AP exams this year earned a 3 or higher, compared with 5 percent back in 2012.

Enrollment in AP course seats for the coming 2026-2027 school year has reached 862, a 64.5 percent increase since 2024-2025.

“We are proud to see our students not only enrolling in AP courses but excelling in them,” said Dr. Christine Johnson, superintendent of the Hoboken Public School District. “This growth reflects our district’s commitment to providing rigorous, college-level opportunities for all learners.”

For the upcoming academic year, Hoboken High School will offer 28 AP courses, the most in school history, according to the district.

These will include English, math, science, social studies, world languages, computer science, arts and economics.

Hoboken High participates in dual enrollment courses that award both high school and college credit.

“This is more than test scores, it’s about building a legacy of learning and preparation for the future,” said James Terry, Hoboken High School guidance counselor. “Our students are proving that with determination and support, they can compete and succeed at the highest levels.”
