Hoboken Main Break Repaired; Pressure Drops In Several Buildings

Fisher: We've had reports of no/low pressure from Hudson Tea and our neighbors at 1450 Washington. And the hospital (3rd and Clinton).

HOBOKEN, NJ — Suez Water has completed repairs after a water main broke Monday morning on Madison Street. Emergency work was required to fix the 12-inch main, the company stated.

Suez issued an advisory about the break early Monday morning, which took place on Madison Street between Newark Street and Observer Highway.

City of Hoboken officials issued a statement about the break on social media:

“Crews have been on the scene at of Observer & Madison since 1:30 a.m. Work continues as they repair the water main break. If any residents or buildings are experiencing low water pressure, please let the City & @SUEZwaterNJ know.”

Hoboken 2nd Ward Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher provided a description of the aftermath of the break on Facebook:

“There is a water main break at Madison and Newark. But it is affecting some areas throughout Hoboken. We've had reports of no or low pressure from Hudson Tea as well as our neighbors at 1450 Washington. And the hospital (3rd and Clinton). Keep me posted on what you experience and I'll do the same. This was from about 15 min ago, it has since been isolated and drained.”

Replying to a commenter on Twitter, Suez said:

“There is no boil water advisory associated with this main break. If your water appears discolored, run the cold water tap until discoloration clears.”

However, during the incident, Suez workers made bottled water available for those affected in the area.

Suez announced around noon that repairs to the water main break on Madison Street have been completed and service has been restored to customers. “Roadway repairs continue at this time,” the company stated on social media. “Thank you to all customers in the area for your patience.”

The water main break took place near the area where Suez has been conducting work on an underground water meter improvement project, although it wasn’t immediately clear if the water main break was related to that project.

Hoboken Mayor Ravinder Bhalla allowed Suez to resume the water meter project last month after shutting it down following a weekend of traffic snarls.
