Hoboken OEM Preps For Storm At Flood-Prone Intersections

The Hoboken OEM is putting "no parking" signs at several flood-prone intersections. Cars will not be towed, officials said.

HOBOKEN, NJ — The Hoboken Office of Emergency Management issued an advisory about local "flood-prone" intersections in the face of a predicted storm and possible flooding on Thursday.

Weather forecasters predicted that New Jersey will get a day of strong storms and winds as moisture from Tropical Storm Michael heads northeast. The actual storm isn't expected to hit the New Jersey mainland, but residents are expected to get hit hard by moisture produced by the weather system that slammed into the Florida panhandle on Wednesday, carrying 155-mph winds.

On Thursday, the Hoboken OEM released the following advisory about the storm and local parking:

“Please be advised that a Flash Flood Watch in effect from Thursday, October 11 at 12:00 PM until Friday, October 12 at 6:00 AM. Average rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 2 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts of 2 to 4 inches possible. Any intense rainfall of greater than 1 inch per hour may result in flash flooding. Due to the likelihood of flooding in some areas, the Office of Emergency Management is taking precautions by putting no parking signs (“No Parking Signs” in these areas should be taken as advisories, cars will not be towed) and barricades near flood-prone intersections.”

The affected intersections include:

  • 1st and Harrison
  • 2nd and Harrison
  • 3rd and Harrison
  • 4th and Harrison
  • 4th and Monroe
  • 3rd and Jackson
  • 4th and Jackson
  • 9th and Monroe
  • 9th and Madison
  • 10th and Madison
  • 1st and Clinton
  • 3rd and Clinton
  • Henderson and Newark
  • Grove and Newark

In addition, the City of Hoboken and North Hudson Sewerage Authority plan to work together to clear clogged catch basins throughout the city, officials said. Residents can report flooded intersections and clogged drain inlets by calling the NHSA Hotline at 866-689-3970.
