Hoboken Public Meeting On Harborside Park: Rebuild By Design

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and the City of Hoboken invite members of the community to a public meeting on the Rebuild by Design flood risk reduction project. At the meeting, AECOM and OMA will present updated design alternatives and scale models of Harborside Park as well as discuss the different program and layout concepts with the community.

The meeting will be held in the gymnasium of Elysian Charter School (1460 Garden Street) at 7 p.m. on June 6.

“The beauty of Rebuild by Design is that the project seamlessly incorporates flood infrastructure into our urban environment while also providing open space amenities,” said Mayor Bhalla. “We’re proud of the Ridge and Meadow concepts the designers have advanced. I thank the NJDEP for their continued commitment to implementing this innovative and adaptive project. I also want to thank Governor Murphy for his leadership and support in helping Hoboken become one of the first communities in the country prepared to face the uncertainties of climate change.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT? During this phase of work, the Resist components (flood control structures to resist storm surge) will be designed, which includes a proposed community park that incorporates flood control structures to resist storm surge. DEP is engaging the public and stakeholders in the Project Area to participate in the design of the Resist components. At this meeting you will:

• Be updated on preferences for park components that emerged from prior community input

• Review materials for two design concepts that have been further developed for Cove Park based on community input

• Provide input on design materials presented to help the design team arrive at and continue to develop one preferred design concept for Cove Park

WHAT IS THE PROJECT? The Rebuild by Design - Hudson River Project is a comprehensive urban floodwater management strategy to reduce the flood risk from storm surge and rainfall flood events to flood prone areas within the Project Area, which comprises the entire City of Hoboken, and adjacent areas of Weehawken and Jersey City. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $230 million to the State of New Jersey for the Project, which includes the design and environmental impact analysis of the overall comprehensive master plan of the entire project (including the Resist and Delay, Store, Discharge components) and funding for the construction of the Resist components (coastal storm surge projects).
