Hoboken Residents Can Choose New Energy Provider: 2 Meetings Planned

HOBOKEN, NJ — As it has in the past, the city of Hoboken has negotiated with electric companies to find environment-friendly providers who charge a reasonable rate.

But not every resident has to pick the city's choice. They can also opt out of the program.

The city has planned two information sessions this week to help consumers understand their choices, and ask questions.

"Hoboken’s new third-party electric supply contract is coming, and the rate is changing from roughly 12.9 cents to 18.7 cents per kWh," said Councilman Paul Presinzano in a message to constituents this week. "If you want to opt out, the city’s mailing includes a form, and I’ve posted a tutorial on my social media showing you one way to complete it by mail."

The city is also hosting virtual and in-person information sessions.

Two Sessions

The first one was scheduled for Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There will also be an in-person information session at the Multi-Service Center at 124 Grand St. this Wednesday during the day, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The first half of the presentation will be in English, the second half in Spanish, the city said.

"The city’s consultant will provide details on the program, which has saved residents over $1 million since its launch, including upcoming updates, and answer questions," the city said.

Additional information about the updated program has been mailed to residents.

As required by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, residents can opt out of the program at any time, and there are no fees associated with opting out.
