Hoboken Residents Wake Up to Discolored Tap Water on Thursday

United Water: Incident was caused by 'routine maintenance' on Jersey City aqueduct.

If you’re one of the Hoboken residents who woke up to find discolored water coming out of their faucets this morning, there’s no need to worry, according to city officials and the municipal water provider.

The city sent out a Facebook message around midnight, alerting residents that several United Water customers were reporting “discolored water” in their homes.

“It is safe and should be clearing up soon,” the city’s post stated.

David Johnson, a spokesman for United Water, told Patch at 12:30 p.m. that the water “should be fine now” and that the temporary discoloration was completely nonhazardous.

According to Johnson, sediment was released unexpectedly during “routine maintenance” on the Jersey City aqueduct, which caused the discoloration in Hoboken.

“We started getting calls about it last night… it was real brief,” said Johnson, who added that the calls began to die down early this morning.

Johnson said that if Hoboken residents continue to find discolored water, they should call the United Water customer service line at 800-422-5987.
