Hoboken School Gets $1 Million Gift From Local Donors

Mustard Seed School in Hoboken received a $1 million gift from a local family.

A Hoboken school has found itself the unexpected recipient of a $1 million gift.

The Mustard Seed School in Hoboken announced the seven-figure donation from the Battaglia-Reyes family on Wednesday, calling it the largest in the school’s history.

The gift will go into the school’s general endowment, more than doubling the fund and significantly boosting long-term sustainability, school officials stated.

“Mustard Seed School speaks to our hearts,” a spokesperson for the family stated in a release. “We’re inspired by the school’s holistic approach to education - nurturing students spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially. We’re committed to Mustard Seed’s socially-responsible mission to serve students from all backgrounds.

“Coming together as a family to make this gift propels the school forward. Gives it strength. We hope that other families will also be inspired to invest in the school. That will further build the endowment and ensure a Mustard Seed education for many more generations. There’s no better place to donate.”

“The Battaglia-Reyes family has never had a child attend the school,” Head of School Thomas Postema stated. “Yet they’ve worked alongside us in different capacities over the years. They are guardians of the school’s mission. Keeping the mission alive is just as important now as when Mustard Seed was founded over 35 years ago. I’m grateful beyond words.”
