Hudson County Man Offered Someone Money To Kill Woman He Knew: Prosecutors

A Hudson County man was charged with conspiracy to commit murder after offering money to someone to kill a woman he knew, prosecutors say.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — A North Bergen man has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder after allegedly offering money to someone to kill a woman he knew, prosecutors said Friday.

Miguel Cortes, 37, was charged with the first-degree crime after he was arrested this past Thursday, May 14, outside his home on Paterson Plank Road, said the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors said that on Thursday, May 9, 2024, "The North Bergen Police Department received a tip of a possible murder-for-hire scheme. The investigation found the defendant offered money to another individual to murder a female known to Cortes."

The intended victim was not injured, prosecutors said.

Cortes was taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. The state of New Jersey has filed a motion for detention that's tentatively scheduled to be heard Monday, May 20, prosecutors said.

Prosecutor Esther Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Major Case Unit and the North Bergen Police Department with the investigation and arrest.
