Starting Friday, Dec. 6, The Hudson School will present Paul Rudnick’s comedic production I Hate Hamlet in its performance space at 601 Park Avenue. In the play, Andrew Rally, a rising Hollywood television star, has come to New York City to perform the most famous role in the history of theatre: Hamlet. His girlfriend, Deirdre McDavey is ecstatic; his agent, Lillian Troy, is thrilled; and his big-shot Hollywood producer friend, Gary Peter Lefkowitz, is thoroughly confused as to why Andrew would choose to ruin his career by doing “theatre.”
Recently, an old apartment has gone on sale in Greenwich Village and Felicia Dantine, a sassy
and ambitious real estate agent, thinks it would be a perfect fit for Andrew. This apartment had
once been owned by the famous actor John Barrymore – who, himself, had played Hamlet to
great acclaim in 1922. Felicia also just happens to be psychic, and in short order, gathers
everyone together to conduct a séance to contact Barrymore’s ghost for advice on performing
Hamlet.
