Fire At Recycling Center On Hoboken/Jersey City Border Stopped Trains: Officials

Light rail trains have resumed after three-story pile of cardboard caught fire near the Hoboken/Jersey City border Friday.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — A cardboard fire at a recycling center in Jersey City Hoboken/Jersey City border caused Friday morning's light rail suspension, officials said.

Trains resumed after 8 a.m., officials said.

According to Jersey City public safety spokeswoman Kim Wallace-Scalcione, the Jersey City Fire Department responded to 2 Hope Street around 4 a.m.

Firefighters saw a "fully involved" 30-foot by 30-foot pile of cardboard, she said.

The fire extended to a nearby trailer and into a storage garage within the facility, prompting officials to request a second alarm, she said.

The Hoboken Fire Department assisted in fighting the fire, said officials in both towns.

The fire was brought under control, and no injuries were reported, Wallace-Scalcione said.

Light rail service from Second Street in Hoboken to Newport in Jersey City was suspended for two hours as a precaution, she said.
