HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Are you ready for a unique 5K race that takes you across two states and through an underwater tunnel?

The Lincoln Tunnel Challenge – a race to benefit Special Olympics New Jersey – will take place in New Jersey and New York on Sunday, April 28. For more information click here.

Participants run or walk a 5K (3.1 mile) certified USATF course that leads them through the tunnel and back. The toll booths in Weehawken mark both the start and finish of the race. There’s a cone turnaround once participants reach the New York City side of the tunnel.

According to event organizers:

“The Port Authority of NY/NJ closes the south tube the night before the race. They continue throughout the night and throughout the race ventilating clean air in and out of the tunnel. Air is changed every 90 seconds. The road is degreased the night before the event. Vehicles are not permitted in the tunnel until the race concludes.”

The tunnel’s center tube will remain open to vehicles going from New Jersey into New York City during the event. The south tube will reopen at approximately 11 a.m., race organizers said.
