Longtime Hoboken Meat Shop Truglio's To Be Replaced By 'The Hive'

The owners intend to "serve great coffee and treats, curate clean and purposeful beauty and wellness products, and foster community."

HOBOKEN, NJ — Nearly a year after longtime Hoboken meat shop Truglio's left the corner of Park Avenue and 10th Street, signage has gone up saying a store called The Hive will soon arrive. "Sip, shop, stay," hints the sign on the storefront.

The first Instagram post a week ago describes the mission as, "Serve great coffee and treats, curate clean and purposeful beauty and wellness products, and foster community. We’re a shop founded by two local moms who can’t wait to meet you in person."

Instagram and Facebook posts say the shop will open in fall of 2020.

Truglio's closed for good last June when the two brothers who owned it retired. It had been around since 1952, when Al Truglio bought the meat shop from another owner. The rather large space actually also held a separate business that was folded into the shop.

In an Instagram post on Friday, the owners of the Hive said, "We know we have some big shoes to fill by taking over this legendary spot and we promise to work hard every day to bring the same sense of community and passion to our business as the Truglio Family did while serving the neighborhood within these walls. We’re keeping some of the beautiful vintage finishes that still adorn the interior while modernizing it with our own flavor to bring you a space that’s welcoming, warm, and sparks just a bit of joy."

Saturday brought more revelations: "We’ve consistently said that we want the shop to be inviting and warm, a place you want to linger and one that feels a bit like home, and our lead architect, Rob, has landed on a final design that’s beyond our wildest dreams."

The owners said Sunday that more details will be announced in the next several weeks.

The store isn't the only one that's taking over (and maintaining the look of) a longtime corner store. Last year, Sasso's Deli closed at the corner of Eleventh and Garden streets — two blocks from Truglio's — after more than 40 years in business. The spot is being taken over by Olivia's Restaurant, which was originally set to open this spring. (See photo by clicking the arrow above.)
