Mayor: Hoboken's Bicycle Share Program Is Getting Closer
City officials are working to reduce the amount of advertising at bike stations, which will have solar panels and light up at night.

Hoboken’s long-awaited bike share program, which was expected to kick off in March, is getting closer to becoming a reality.
In a June 16 memo to the City Council, Mayor Dawn Zimmer provided an update on the financial status of the project, which will create 30 stations throughout the city and feature 300 “smart bikes” for the public to access. [See related Patch article]
“We are very close to finalizing the sponsorships for our bike share program, and we look forward to announcing the founding sponsors shortly,” Zimmer stated.

Zimmer added that the city is attempting to limit the number of advertising panels which will be located at the bike stations.
“Based on input from the Transportation and Parking Committee and working with the bike share operator, we are looking to minimize the number of stations with advertising panels while still generating the revenue necessary to fund the program,” Zimmer wrote. “As a result, we are proposing to locate ad panels at only 13 locations, with some of the locations having two ad panels.”

According to Zimmer, the ad panels will be 4 feet by six feet – the same size as the ones on the city’s bus shelters – and will be solar powered to illuminate them at night.
“We sought to avoid locating panels near parks and primarily residential areas wherever possible and to focus on commercial areas, near transit, and other higher profile locations that will generate sufficient revenue to support the program,” the mayor stated.
Panels will be located at:
- Hudson PI & River St (2 panels)
- Hudson PI & Hudson St (2 panels)
- 1st St & Washington St (1 panel)
- 4th St & Washington St (1 panel)
- 6th St & River St (1 panel)
