New Hudson County Coronavirus Cases Up 2.7 Percent: Weekly Update

Seventeen more Hudson County residents passed away from coronavirus this week, showing the fatality rate is slowing slightly.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — The pandemic continues to have an impact on Hudson County, according to this week's data. This Friday's numbers from the state indicate that new cases are rising in the county at the same rate as the previous week, while deaths are still a factor but are slowing.

On Friday, March 19, the county had had 68,563 total confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic, an increase of 1,808 since the previous Friday, or 2.7 percent. This is the same rate of increase in new cases as the previous two weeks.

The county also had a total of 1,877 confirmed deaths, up from 1,860 the previous week, or 17 new deaths. That's an increase of 1 percent.

On Friday, March 12, the state posted that Hudson County had 66,755 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic, and 1,860 confirmed deaths. This was a 2.8 percent increase — about the same as the previous week. In addition, there were 22 new deaths since the week before, an increase of 1.2 percent.

On Friday, March 5, Hudson County reported 64,908 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic, and a total of 1,838 confirmed deaths. That was an increase in cases from the week before of 2.9 percent, and an increase in deaths of 1 percent.

A week earlier, the county 63,044 confirmed cases and 1,820 confirmed deaths. That was a 2.7 percent increase in cases since the week before, and an 1.8 percent increase in deaths.

The disease’s impact is reflected in the state Department of Health's most recent "COVID-19 Activity Level Report," issued weekly.

State hospitalizations and deaths

The state of New Jersey reported Wednesday that 1,895 people are still hospitalized with the virus, 407 of those in critical care, and 57 percent of those on ventilators. 38 more fatalities were reported since the day before, bringing the state's confirmed deaths to 21,530.

While the daily fatality rate is starting to drop again, it's not at the level it was six months ago, before the second wave in New Jersey when there were a total of only two coronavirus fatalities reported statewide from Sept. 7 to Sept. 8.

On April 30, 2020, the one-day death toll in New Jersey reached an all-time high of 460 residents in 24 hours.

As of Thursday, across the country, approximately 538,000 Americans had died of the virus. (You can see which states had the highest death toll in the past week on this CDC map.)
