NJ Rescue Groups Give Shelter-Shocked Dog New Leash On Life

A pair of animal welfare groups in North Jersey used human-power to give a second chance to a stressed-out stray named Haratua.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Life in an animal shelter can be scary. But using human-power, a pair of animal welfare groups in North Jersey recently came to the rescue of a shelter-shocked (but lovable) dog named Haratua.

Last week, the Hudson County-based Liberty Humane Society shared the sad tale of Haratua, a 2-year-old who was brought to their Jersey City facility after being found wandering the streets in May.

“Since then, she has consistently demonstrated high anxiety and extreme arousal – both during her assessment and in most of her subsequent interactions with LHS staff,” the shelter wrote. “Haratua presents a risk to our staff members trying to handle and care for her, particularly with the heightened stress and abundant stimuli of the shelter environment. We urgently need a rescue group with foster homes willing to step forward to give her a chance.”

Luckily, the network at Brick City Rescue – a New Jersey-based a 501(c)(3) domestic animal rescue that finds high-risk animals foster homes – stepped up to heed the call for aid.

On Wednesday, the LHS wrote a heartwarming note of thanks to the Brick City Rescue crew on social media:

“Last week we issued an urgent plea -- Haratua needed out of the shelter environment and to find an experienced foster home with a rescue group. We are SO GRATEFUL to our friends and partners at Brick City Rescue Inc. for coming alongside us and Haratua! Partnerships like this make our community of compassion stronger and give a chance to animals who truly need and deserve one. Thanks also to everyone who shared and cared.”
