NJ Transit Suspends Penn Station Trains, Bridge 'Stuck Open'

NJ Transit: Service suspended at NY Penn Station due to malfunctioning bridge near Secaucus. Delays on HBLR and Atlantic City Rail Line.

NJ Transit train riders had a frustrating morning of delays on Thursday. Incidents included a suspension for train service in and out of New York Penn Station due to a malfunctioning bridge near Secaucus, delays to the Hudson Bergen Light Rail due to “slippery conditions” and delays on the Atlantic City Rail Line due to “equipment issues,” the agency stated.

Shortly after 11 a.m., NJ Transit announced that train service at NY Penn Station was suspended due to the Portal Bridge being “stuck in an open position near Secaucus.”

Midtown direct trains were diverted to Hoboken. NJ Transit buses cross-honored rail tickets and passes, and PATH trains accepted rail tickets and passes at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd Street.

  • “Hudson Bergen Light Rail Service is subject to 15-minute delays system-wide due to slippery rail conditions.”
  • “Atlantic City Rail Line service remains subject to up to 45-minute delays in both directions due to equipment issues. NJ Transit buses will cross-honor NJ Transit Atlantic City Rail Line tickets and passes.”

Thursday’s suspension and delays come after another long day at NY Penn Station on Monday, when commuters found themselves facing a disabled Amtrak train in one of the Hudson River tunnels.

During that incident – which took place as the Port Authority’s PATH system was also experiencing delays – both agencies issued alerts that the other was cross-honoring riders, leaving many commuters baffled as to how to get to their destinations.
