NORTH JERSEY, NJ — After two disabled NJ Transit trains caused delays and suspensions during the Monday morning commute, the impacts could continue into evening, said the agency's CEO.

Trains were delayed both into and out of New York City's Penn Station on Monday morning, and two lines were briefly suspended.

"I want to personally apologize for the difficult and frustrating experience many of you had traveling with us this morning," wrote Kris Kolluri, who began the post in January 2025, in a letter on Monday afternoon.

Kolluri said that around 7 a.m., Amtrak’s overhead wires fell on top of an NJ Transit train on the Northeast Corridor just east of Newark Penn Station, disabling the train.

"Customers were safely taken off the train and accommodated on another service," he said.

A second train experienced a power loss at 9 a.m. near North Elizabeth, he said, causing 300 customers to be moved to waiting buses.

"We expect some impacts to continue into evening and peak periods," he noted. "I am truly sorry for the inconvenience, uncertainty, and stress this caused."

Earlier Reporting

Trains heading into and out of Penn Station in New York City were subject delays of up to an hour on Monday due to Amtrak wire issues and a disabled train, NJ Transit said.

Later in the morning, two rail lines were briefly suspended, but resumed before noon. The agency said they were still cross-honoring tickets due to the delays.

"Following the earlier suspension on the NEC and NJCL rail lines due to Amtrak overhead wire issues, rail service has resumed on both lines, however, customers may still experience residual delays," they wrote just before noon.

Earlier, a disabled train near Newark had caused delays before 8 a.m.

NJ Transit rail tickets and passes were cross-honored by PATH at Hoboken, Newark, and 33rd Street in New York, the agency said. Visit njtransit.com/abc for more information on cross-honoring, they said.
