Olivia Rodrigo Video Has Fans Flocking To Hoboken Park: Here's What They Found
Singer Olivia Rodrigo added to a collection of love locks at a Hoboken park, although she called it "New York."

HOBOKEN, NJ — A park on the Hoboken waterfront has become a popular spot to leave locks with loving messages — and apparently, even rocker Olivia Rodrigo knows it.

Recently, fans of the 23-year-old pop star began seeing pink, heart-shaped locks with the singer's initials in locations around the world, sparking rumors of a forthcoming album or tour.
Then, on Monday, Rodrigo posted videos to Instagram saying she had hidden locks in Los Angeles, London, Paris, and New York.

Fans recognized the "New York" location as the Hoboken waterfront. (She's far from the first person to stretch the truth by claiming something in the Garden State is in Manhattan; just look at the sports teams).
Followers of the singer have been flocking to Pier C Park on the city's central waterfront, while trying to guess the symbolism of the locks.

On Wednesday, one fan, Emma Hernandez, 25, was at the park looking for the love lock.
"These are the only railings that match the scene in the video," she told Patch.

Hernandez has lived in Hoboken for three years, so it wasn't hard for her to search.
But she was unable to find the lock, theorizing — as many fans have — that someone already swiped it.
Longtime Lock Location
Pier C, located at 340 Sinatra Drive, opened in late 2007, part of the ongoing revitalization of the city's waterfront after the shipping industry left.

Many of the locks on the chain-link fence date to 2020 or earlier.
While most bear a couple's name with a date, one from 2015 has a woman's name scratched off, perhaps conjuring Rodrigo's angry tune, "Good for you / I guess you moved on really easily..."

The "love locks" tradition apparently started in Paris and spread to the New York area, according to a 2014 story in the New York Times.
The same year, the Jersey Journal wrote that locks were starting to appear at Pier C Park. Then-city spokesman Juan Melli was quoted as saying the city would remove the locks.
So what happened? A little laissez-faire lock leaving?
City spokeswoman Marilyn Baer told Patch, "The locks have been around for years, and while not something the city officially set up or manages, we have not received any community complaints."
She added, "Of course, we’re always glad to see the City of Hoboken getting love, and are not surprised at all that someone like Olivia Rodrigo would want to shine an international spotlight on our amazing city."
For his part, Melli — who no longer works for the city — said the situation was challenging.
"We had a strict no-locks policy," he said. "The locks were not persuaded."
New Album
Meanwhile, Rodrigo announced on Wednesday that a new album will be released this spring. "You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl In Love" comes out June 12.
While waiting, fans might keep their eyes open for new locks. Influencer Aubrey Violeta said in a video shot in Hoboken this week, "Maybe a new one will pop up. We'll see."
