Outage May Cause Traffic Delays Near Lincoln Tunnel: Officials

A power outage in Weehawken knocked out traffic lights on the Hoboken border. It may cause delays near the Lincoln Tunnel on Wednesday.

HOBOKEN, NJ — A power outage in Weehawken knocked out several traffic lights on the Hoboken border just prior to the Wednesday evening rush hours. It may cause traffic delays near the Lincoln Tunnel, authorities said.

Weehawken city officials tweeted the following advisory around 2:30 p.m.:

"There is currently a power outage in Weehawken and Union City from N. Marginal Highway to 42nd/Liberty Ave from Park Ave to Blvd East. This outage is affecting homes, businesses and traffic lights in this area. Traffic delays can be expected. Weehawken Police are on the scene."

Weehawken officials provided an update roughly an hour later:

"Power has been restored to most affected areas. Please avoid Park Avenue/Pleasant Avenue/North Marginal and the Route 495 ramp from Park Avenue due to Fire Department and PSE&G activity."

Hoboken city officials issued the following advisory at 3:33 p.m.:

“Due to a power outage in Weehawken, several of the traffic lights in Weehawken approaching the Hoboken entrance are out of operation, causing traffic delays. Two Hoboken Police Officers and Traffic Control Officers have been dispatched from Hoboken to assist with traffic management. The Lincoln Tunnel is open, but there may be delays entering and exiting the tunnel and near the northern entrances to Hoboken, especially during rush hour.”

“Currently, the Willow Avenue Bridge is only being used for cars and buses entering and exiting the Lincoln Tunnel. Residents are encouraged to enter and exit Hoboken on the southern entrances to the city if possible.”

Hoboken officials provided the following update at 6:01 p.m.:

"Traffic in and out of Hoboken from the North end has returned to normal... Weehawken has reopened access to Rt. 4953... Hoboken officers and Traffic Control officers have returned to Hoboken for their regular duty."
