Parachute Victim ID'd: Navy SEAL Killed At Fleet Week Event In North Jersey

One person was killed in a parachute accident on Sunday in New Jersey, according to reports.​ Others were also reportedly hurt.

JERSEY CITY - A Navy SEAL who was killed in a parachute accident on Sunday in New Jersey has been identified. Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Remington Peters, 27, of Colorado was identified as the victim, according to a statement from Peters’ family released by the U.S. Navy.

“Although our time with him was cut short, we are so grateful that we were blessed with such a positive and principled loving man,” according to the statement. “He is painfully missed. No words could do justice, but we are so grateful for all that he taught us, and all the love he gave us in his 27 wonderful years. Today, we honor our selfless, humble and quiet professional.”

Peters joined the Navy in 2008 and graduated from Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL in 2009. He was a member of the U.S. Navy's elite parachute team “The Leap Frogs” and was jumping as part of the New York Fleet Week.

Peters also served in two SEAL units based on the West Coast and served in two combat deployments, while also jumping more than 900 times, according to the U.S. Navy.

Peters was pronounced dead today at 1:10 p.m. His parachute malfunctioned and he landed in the Hudson River during an aerial demonstration at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey, according to the Navy.

The service member was retrieved immediately by the U.S. Coast Guard personnel who were specifically standing by in vessels to support the event, and transported to Jersey City Medical Center for care.

The accident occurred at approximately 12:10 p.m. today during a planned Fleet Week New York event that featured a coordinated parachute jump by the Leap Frogs.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, and I ask for all of your prayers for the Navy SEAL community who lost a true patriot today," said Rear Adm. Jack Scorby, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic.

The incident is under investigation.

Others were also reportedly hurt in the accident at the Fleet Week event at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. NJ.com reported that the parachute landed in the parking lot for 30 Hudson St.
